Hello Friends and Dancers,
It's been a while since I have blogged. I have had some life changes, including a move, and some things had to give way during that time. But I am happy to be back blogging about this dance that I love so much.
A couple weeks ago in Wednesday night class we were dancing to the music of Ahmed Adaweyah, sometimes called the "grandfather of shabbi." I promised to share a clip of him so here we are! This one features one of my absolute favorite dancers Souheir Zaki so it's doubly fantastic. Even though it's blurry, it is well worth watching for the way she dances to the music.
This short biography of Ahmed Adaweyah conveys some of the cultural information about him and about shaabi music that I was trying to convey in class. It's a quick read I promise and it's important to start to understand.
If you are interested and up for reading something longer, Amina's shabbi page is essential. I got the picture of Ahmed Adaweya from there!
I hope you enjoy it!
And I am very excited to report that one of my life-long dreams has come true - I have a dance studio in my new house!! This makes scheduling classes and private lessons so much easier, so please contact me if you would like to get together and dance!!
And my Shows Page is updated for December, so if you've been wanting to come and see a show, please head over :) and check out the dates. I'll be at Tannourine in San Mateo this Friday, 12/2 in addition to my regular nights at Marrakech
Happy Dancing!
